When I was a child, Alice in Wonderland was one of my favorite tales.
When I was a child, I was a child of depth and wonder. Mostly because I was isolated in illness and spent my time alone – discovering my connection to the divine at the very early age of 3. (I’ll dive into that discovery another time.)
As a teenager, I realized that I was every character in Wonderland depending on my emotions.
My anger was surely the Queen – (“off with her head”) was simply the best answer for my rage.
Worry and anxiety seemed to be the White Rabbit in me…running around, fearful of missing out (as I often did when I was sick).
Joy and sadness – Alice and her constant ups and downs.
Fear – it lies beneath every character, although I related my fear to the Mad Hatter and would overcome it by seeing it as nonsense.
Grief and letting go – This for me was Wonderland itself. As a teen, it was hard for me to let go of my childhood. I suppose the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar helped with that.
Our childhood shapes us, our teenage years challenge us and as adults, we are expected to have it all worked out.
In many ways, I am still all of those characters in Wonderland and now with great awareness, I find it absolutely AMUSING to be me and to witness everything I think and feel.
Humans are really a piece of work! Take a day to witness yourself and where you might be in Wonderland. Are you in a place of constant query and judgment; are you up and down like Alice? Maybe you are so involved with your one-track mind that stepping out of that would surely make you the Mad Hatter…
Witness you in your life and find the Wonder of it all. Then, and only then, will you be able to change your Character.
